Francois Gaunoux
Les Épenots Pommard 1er Cru Pinot Noir
Still youthful & mostly primary that did not change much over the 3 hours opened. Notes of dark berry fruit, earth, spice & underbrush. Would hold for several more years.

Sep 16th, 2022Enjoyed two bottles during Thanksgiving week 2021. The first bottle was good but the second bottle (on Thanksgiving night) was really pleasant. For 14 year old 1er Cru it was a great example of what good winemaking and good storage can do. Worked just right with turkey, stuffing and trimmings. Did not have the smokiness of any of my previous efforts with this wine (see earlier ratings).

Dec 1st, 2021Very solid 1er Cru Pommard Les Epenots from 2004. Not a stellar year but a good example even with 13 years of age. I've had two bottles recently, the first was likely corked and quite musty. It took a while for the fruit to show after some of that mustiness burned off. The bottle tonight was much more pleasant from the start, showing good secondary and some tertiary notes. More earth and mushroom than bright fruits, but after 45 minutes or so the palate really improved with cedar and leather, some darker red fruits, light smoke and good structure. Enjoyed with a bone-in, grass-fed rib steak, sautéed mushrooms, and couscous.

Sep 18th, 2017Solid Premier Cru Pommard. Light smokiness, good red fruits for a 2004, with earth and some mushroom on the nose. More masculine given the location on the northern side of Pommard.

Nov 3rd, 2015The 2011 is nicer. This is not as complex. Still a nice nose and cherry taste almost.

Jun 17th, 20152010, Domaine Francois Gaunox, Les Epenots 1er Cru Pommard Pinot Noir. Tart fruit, wet dirt, little spice. Drank this a little too early, could use a little more time. Seemed thin and one dimensional.
