Fetzer Vineyards
Eagle Peak California Merlot
This is a nice and simple Merlot from California.
Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.
Showing black fruits with earth, vegetables, spices, chocolates, tobacco, mocha and black pepper.
The nose resembles the palate, yet a little lighter.
Medium plus in body with medium acidity.
Better than I expected from an inexpensive Merlot.
Found it for $4 and decided to take a shot. Not bad at all. Good enough for #MerlotThursday 😃
I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.
13.5% alcohol by volume.
86 points.

Here is my weekly #MerlotThursday...
Dark ruby in color with a wide reddish rim.
Fruity on the nose with black currants, cherries, blueberries, wood, vanilla, cloves, spices, earth and black pepper.
Medium plus in body with medium acidity and nice legs.
Dry on the palate with cherries, cranberries, raspberries, wood, spices, vanilla, earth, light vegetables and peppercorn.
Medium finish with soft tannins and tangy pomegranates.
This is an average Merlot from California. Drinkable and simple. Inexpensive with a tangy ending.
Nothing special, but a good everyday wine that will pair nicely with food.
Good right out of the bottle, and better while fresh (Was better last year).
I paired it with soft and hard cheeses.
13.5% alcohol by volume.
83 points.
$10.

It's time for #MerlotThursday!
Dark ruby in color with a purplish rim.
Fruity nose with blackberries, black currants, plums, bell pepper, oak, barnyard, cloves, vegetables, spices, tobacco leaf and peppercorn.
Full bodied with medium acidity and nice legs.
Dry on the palate with blackberries, raspberries, black currants, vanilla, wood, spices, peppercorn, pencil lead, light vegetables, coffee, chocolates and tobacco.
Medium on the finish with soft tannins and tangy raspberries.
This is a simple Merlot from California. Not fully balanced, but drinkable nonetheless.
Needs an hour to open up properly and remove some of the acidity. A little better than their Cabernet. Drink while still young.
13.5% alcohol by volume.
84 points.
$10.

1 person found it helpfulJul 24th, 2014Today we have Fetzer Eagle Peak 2011 Merlot ( http://www.fetzer.com ). We got this wine for about $5.48 at the local grocer. Although the label says Merlot, this commercial California wine is actually a blend: 77% Merlot, 7% Syrah, 7% Petite Verdot, 5% Carignane, 3% Petite Syrah and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. The description on their website reads thusly: "This Merlot has a deep, rich, ruby color. Warm cherry aromas are accented with notes of mocha, red licorice, sage and toffee. Soft, round tannins make this wine easy to drink with flavors of black cherries and plums balanced with caramel and toffee from the oak." This is mostly true if you overlook the silly wine-speak adjectives. It is a reasonably solid red wine for ordinary drinking. I rate it two out of five stars.
