2003 | Syrah
Erba Mountainside Vineyards; Estate
Napa Valley, California, USA
(92-94; Drink 2023-33)

After a 16Y slumber in storage, this bottle is as vivid as I remembered; raspberry jam, damp leather, ripe plum, dark chocolate, faint espresso, cassis+cedar. Decanted 6H, still uncoiling.

Decanted for almost 3 hours and it's still a beast. Billowing smoke and not for the faint. Plenty of tobacco, leather and burnt rubber to go along with the dark fruits. Black plum, black olive, dried fig, thyme, red pepper and dill. Palate is immensely dry and warm. Even at 11 years old, this still drinks young and has many more years ahead.

Inky dark & foreboding purple, with a nose full of dark plums, smoke, & crushed black pepper. Black cherry, bitter chocolate, & leather give it an edge. 11 years old and not slowing down, this is still an aggressive, dry, & tannic monster.

Paired very well with Lamb stew on day 1 and with Duck on day 2. Complex and still young Napa Syrah, but I prefer the ones from the northern Rhone.

Densely painted clones of steep hillsides, elevated by intense small qualities. It knows what it's doing, for sure.

Been holding onto this for 6-7 years and was excited to open this. Thankfully did not disappoint. As good a Syrah as I've ever had.
