Le Chant de Archet Sancerre Rouge Pinot Noir
Sales Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant
I think Sancerre Rouge always benefits from a little time and this was in a great zone. Floral, earthy and perfectly light on its feet.

Jun 24th, 2017When you hear “Sancerre,” you may immediately think of a crisp, elegant Sauvignon Blanc. Yes, “Sancerre” refers to an appellation in the Central Vineyards of the Loire Valley, France that is perhaps most famous for its world-class Sauvignon Blanc wines. However, this appellation is also home to some seriously delicious Pinot Noir in the form of Sancerre rouge.
Here is a beautifully-ripe and concentrated example.
It’s medium ruby with medium(+) intensity of ripe black cherry, raspberry, strawberry, pomegranate, blueberry, violet, cherry blossom, black tea, wet earth, licorice, nutmeg, and clove.
On the palate, this wine is dry, with medium(+) acidity, a medium(+) body, high alcohol (15%!), medium tannins that are soft and fine-grained, and a medium(+) intensity of flavors consistent with the nose. It has a medium(+) finish, with well-defined flavors that linger.
This wine is very good. Its refreshing acidity balances its opulent fruit notes. While the tannins are powdery and well-integrated, the alcohol takes a more prominent role than would be expected of an outstanding Pinot Noir wine. Still, the intensity and concentration of complex aromas and flavors that jump clusters from fruit to floral to earth and spice notes remain in central focus leaving a lasting and delicious impression.
This wine is suitable for aging; it is drinking beautifully today but has a strong structure of acidity and alcohol to carry it forward, with potential to favorably evolve and gain complexity in the form of additional tertiary notes such as mushroom, fig, dried fruit, and forest floor notes.

After 20 or so minutes of loosening up, lots of plum, cedar, eucalyptus and that extracted zip you hope for from old Pinot vines. A great one before switching to sparkling for the remainder of 2015.
