A favorite from J. Palacios, the 2012 Bierzo Pétalos is drinking well (truth be told, I tend to drink this wine a bit younger). Comprised of 100% Mencia, from vines aged 40-90 years, Bierzo Pétalos is always a stunning value. Dusky aromas of black cherry and plum dance with earthy notes, gaminess and a touch of underbrush. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, with fine tannins that feel like an ashen-sky, cloaking bright acidity and red berries at the core, it slowly unwinds to reveal subtle minerality and dried herbs.
