Excited to taste modern Chenin from a top-tier South African producer. A little taken aback initially by the new oak character, but it mellowed after a couple of days and revealed a bit more varietal character. The wine retains freshness, acidity and nice core of apple and quince but is not clearly delineated as true Chenin Blanc. Lacking the delicacy, floral and subtle herbal notes that pure Chenin tends to express. Any debate about this wine is a matter of style, not quality.

Throw new oak at Chenin Blanc and you end up with a wine that is indistinguishable from Oakes Chardonnay. The oak overpowers the delicate lanolin and wax aromas of pure Chenin Blanc. However, this is a well made wine and is a good representative sample of the South African style of Oakes Chenin.

Oaked out. Not much resemblance to Chenin Blanc.

Dominated by the oak at this stage, but plenty of structure. Assuming the oak integrated over the next couple of years, this should be a decent wine.
