Deep Woods Estate
Reserve Margaret River Chardonnay
A very good modern Chardonnay from the Margaret River. Smoky Leesy Flinty Mealy , struck match aromas. Lean to medium weight palate with mainly citrus and ripe grapefruit flavours. Barb thought nectarine notes as well. Still quite delicate but with great length and persistence. This Chardonnay won the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge in 2014 from 680 entries and 98 points from James.

Oct 9th, 2021Beautiful Margaret River Chard. Elegant, complex and tense. Youthful and powerful, hints of matchstick and white peach. Grapefruit and minerals on the palate with perfect length. I like this a lot. One of Australia’s best Chards, imho.

Apr 7th, 2020Initial impressions of burnt match and lees stirring. Cashews and Stone fruit. A “worked “ modern interpretation of Chardonnay. Winner of the James Halliday Australian Chardonnay Challenge 2014 from over 600 entries. He gave it 98 points A little too worked for my palate but absolutely delicious the following day.

1 person found it helpfulFeb 28th, 2020Pale to Mid Lemon in colour. Nose of Lemon Grapefruit Meal with Flint and Struck Match. 8 hours later pronounced Pineapple aromas. Reviews in Australia have said very Good but "worked " particularly evident on the nose. Malolactic Fermentation with Lees stirring etc. Whatever they did this wine won the 2014 James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge from around 640 entries I believe. Certainly in the restrained mould with well managed French Oak. Medium + Intensity with great length and persistence. Sharing the same Margaret River DNA as a good Leeuwin Art Series but not as full bodied.

Apr 16th, 2017Continuing on with award winning Chardonnays this Deep Woods won James Hallidays Chardonnay 2014 Challenge with 670 entries. 98 points from JH. Nose of struck match, roasted nuts and oak but not too much of the latter. Great fruit and excellent wine making Strikes a balance between the new lean style of Oz Chardonnay and showing also a fuller fruit palate. . Excellent young Chardonnay which could hold its head up anywhere. 18+ Tasted again 23rd October. A very smart Chardy. Showing a little overt oak but the total package is world class. 96 points.
