Saturated violet. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes black and blue fruit preserves, pipe tobacco and pungent flowers, along with oak spice and vanilla flourishes. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering deeply concentrated, smoke-tinged cassis, cherry preserve, licorice rose pastille and mocha flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Finishes sweet and wonderfully long, showing fine clarity, steadily building tannins and lingering spiciness. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, July 2022)

A massive, hedonistic monster of a wine, the 2016 ‘Patrimony’ Cabernet Sauvignon performs beautifully at the four year mark with a dense core of dark fruits with chocolate and black tea undertones. This spent a significant time in new French wood (30 months) which has created a very plush mouthfeel and err of decadence. Not for the weary, enjoy now with a very long decant, as this will go for another fifteen plus years.

Opaque purple-black colored, unfurling to reveal freshly crushed blackberries, mulberries and blackcurrants plus suggestions of dusty soil, bouquet garni, pencil lead and cast-iron pan with gentle wafts of sandalwood, cardamom, rare beef and black tea. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house, strutting incredibly ripe yet super firm tannins, and it has lovely, uplifting freshness to help define all those black fruit and savory layers, finishing with epic length. Needs time, but this should turn out to be incredibly nuanced and long lived!

I’m a Napa wine snob. This makes me reconsider my snobbery. I’ll be buying more.

Still pretty young. Could use a few more years to mellow out.
