The CVNE (pronounced "coonay") Tempranillo is always dependable and presents a great opportunity to obtain older vintages--back to the 60's and 70's--at a price that doesn't totally kick your ass. This was a mature solid Rioja but without a great deal of verve, depth or punch. Good not great.

1999 from magnum. Super tight and timid. It was pleasant and gentle, but it never really strutted around. Seemed like it was still waiting to show its true self. #WorkWine

Silky and elegant with the coconut notes of American oak melding with cherry and strawberry fruit over leather and wet chalkboard.

Outstanding!! Barnyardy with hints of tobacco leaves, coffee on the nose. And very fresh red fruit on the palate: cherry, strawberry. Can age more!

Amazingly well aged wine, the voted favorite of the Portland weekly wine group! Touch of Barnyard, nice beautifully aged cherry, vanilla, long finish.

Enveloping red fruit, pistachio coconut oak and coconut ice cream, wild strawberry, very fresh. Palate is big, blushing and soft but with an underlying serious streak. Soft tannic structure, very easy drinking.

SNM (Sunday Night Magnum!) with @Steve Haro @Andrew Neyer @David Moffat @Matt Davis.
Another special wine in tonight’s magnum lineup. This was my contribution. An anniversary gift from my betrothed a few years back. The 2004 was the
#1 rated wine on WS Top 100 in 2013. The 1999 lived up to expectations. Tons of blackberry, mushroom, leather, and awesomeness. More austere than I expected. This can easily go another 5 years without breaking a sweat. Maybe 10. This is one of the last truly special bottles I have, but so happy I cracked it open with good friends who appreciated it. That’s what wine is meant for.

Double Blind, I thought this was Left Bank BDX 96-00. Very impressed with the nose and secondary notes. Great bottle. 1/12 guessed Spain.
