Colli Orientali del Friuli Tazzelenghe

Decanted for 90min prior to service. The 2013 pours, a deep ruby color with a near opaque core; medium viscosity, with light staining of the tears. Small signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with notes of tart, mostly dark with some red forest fruit: blackberries, black currants, rotting strawberries, a fresh package of red rope licorice, purple flowers, old pennies, and dry, rocky minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin(+?) and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+. I think this is my first time enjoying a wine made with Tazzelenghe and, if I can help it, will not be my last. Drink now.

Never before seen grape variety. Tazzelenghe the "tongue cutter." Dried herbs, fennel and dirty mushrooms.

New to me. Bright, lavish. Feels like sexy velvety right bank...

Ok, never opened up like I hope

From a re-discovered ancient local grapes (tazzelenghe is the Friuli tipical slang meaning "tongue-cutter" due to its terrific tannins), this wine found its balance after aging 2 years in oak and several years in bottle. Red/black small fruits and sweet spices at the nose, powerful and fresh on the palate, with licorice and vanilla final flavours.

First time with a red from the region. Pencil lead, bell pepper, licorice, really nice tannins.

Rich, earthy, hint of cherry, delicious!

Almost Bordeaux like. Rich tannins and spicy with surprising finish. Not what I was expecting from this Friulian wine.
