This magnum was a gift from co-workers at my old job when I left to take a new one. Nice coworkers! So rich and resolved. This wine reminds me of Neil Young’s Vampire Blues. “I’m a vampire babe. Suckin’ blood from the earth.” Grenache pulled from God’s earth. Incredible intensity and length, but still entirely in balance. Length for days. Iodine, stones, blood.

Even better than last year’s bottle, which I called “the devil’s work” and rated 95. So much more emerging and the finest, grainy tannins just melted on my palate. Burnt cocoa, velvety cassis. Never got warmed up due to Covid doors open. This has decades to go.

Evolving and improving still. Rich, ripe and hedonistically extracted. Secondary notes of blood and charcoal emerging, licorice and baking spice. Don’t let the angelic imagery fool you, this is the Devil’s work for sure. Many years to go.

It’s so hard to source these and it showed really well. I find these less bretty and earth driven than most other CDPs. So, not as thought provoking with secondary characteristics but a little more purity and more fruit expression.

Promise in a bottle, full throttle and beautifully extracted juice loaded with fig, pepper and spice. Sharp, powerful tannins suggest a 20 year wine with dark blue fruit to match. Can’t wait to see how this sorts out but my kids may be the ones who find out....

WNH event number two. Rhône varietal wines with TX BBQ...a match made in Heaven!

This and the Cayuse were in the running for WOTD. I got charred plum, fig, and cassis on the nose with a palate of black cherry, violet and dark chocolate. Acidity and tannic structure were in perfect harmony here. Killer
@Bill Bender !
