Surpringly soft, perhaps bottle had been open a while. Dark core, with delicate mid palate. sweet oak still very prevalent in youth.

The epitome of a head scratcher. I was given this as a gift about a year ago and had forgotten about it. The nose alone gave me promise on this. Dark, mineral driven, graphite, mocha. It showed decent resemblance of a Stag’s Leap district wine. However, the palate was just...? Hard to describe. Bit of coconut, ripe berries, plums, licorice. Not over-oaked, but the oak itself seemed out of place, if that makes sense. I actually didn’t get much improvement out of this even after 2-hrs in the decanter. 🤔 I know they are making an effort to be all estate, which is great, but this was just a bit disjointed. Maybe a wine to forget about for 20yrs and see if you get a surprise?

Clos Du Val, French for "small vineyard estate of a small valley," was founded in 1972 in the now legendary Stags Leap District by Franco-American entrepreneur John Goelet. Had a bottle a year ago, aging well. Dark inky purple with aromas of black fruits, spices and herb pepper. On the palate for this Bordeaux blend, ripe red and black berry fruits, complex with leather, cacao and vanilla. Tannins are round and full on lingering finish, put this in the cellar, still has room to age.

Not a good value. I have had better for less money.
