The 2021 Sangiovese Predappio is perfumed with an earthy tinge that perfectly offsets its ripe blueberry fruit. This is round and supple, with a classic feel, displaying amazing energy and a fine cut. Citrus-laced plums and violet undertones linger on the long and gently tannic finish. $25.00 (Eric Guido, Vinous, September 2024)

Guesses for this blind basically took us on an Italian wine country tour - from Montalcino to the Alto Aldige to Alto Piedmonte. Ergo, variety guesses were as good as a shot in the dark - Sangiovese, Pinot Nero, Nebbiolo, strange Italian variety names courtesy of the Italian winemakers on the table. What is clear though is the youth and elegance of the wine. Heaps of sweet black cherries and roses, some herbs and spices, along with juicy acidity and superfine tannins, which most thought were a touch green. I thought it drank it really well, though if anything, the blind does prove how difficult it can be to pinpoint these “gentler” style of reds which are more giving in their youth. And the reveal - A Sangiovese from Emilia-Romagna. Who would have thought?

The 2019 Sangiovese Romagna Predappio lifts from the glass with masses of dark red fruits, along with wild herbs, flinty crushed rocks and hints of dusty rose. It’s silky with a lifted and juicy personality, showcasing wild berry fruits and sage nuances. This leaves a staining of fine tannins, creating a structured and dry finale as hints of licorice slowly fade. The 2019 will take some time to come fully into focus. It’s refined for one year in a combination of tonneaux and large Slavonian casks. (Eric Guido, Vinous, March 2023)
