I occasionally buy a modestly-priced Bordeaux, and then invariably am disappointed. Bordeaux is one of those areas where you DO have to spend serious money to taste greatness. This modestly-priced Merlot-based wine is meh. The nose is fairly rich, showing dark, ripe berries but still some of that dried twigs-and-leaves thing that exemplifies middlin’ Bordeaux. The palate is overextracted and bitter. I really have to stop buying Bordeaux. I feel like Charlie Brown with Lucy and the football.

At last a wine that is not the remains of my Champagne weekend. It’s a smidge green and tannic. I wish I’d saved it for a few years. This is potent and interesting and I think I should have just given it at least three years. D’oh. Maybe a day or so of being open will help because the potential on this is huge given fruit, tannins and acid.
