Lots of things going on. Nose offers plump black fruit, minerality and a palette of earthy notes. Mouth is a superb balance in between reminiscent fruit, minerals and texture, all lingering in lenght. Excellent representative of this excellent vintage.

The wine still has nice, lively tannins.

Very youthful. A touch of Brett. Awesome cedar and tobacco nose with tons of plum fruit, slightly obscured by some horse and band aid. This was about the best showing you could expect from a slightly imperfect bottle.

It needed an hour decant to come around and blow off the barnyard funk. After that, elegance, ruby blue and red soft fruits; blueberries, bright cherries, fresh juicy strawberries, some cooked green bell early on that gradually faded, steeped tea, soft saddlewood & minerality, a touch of easy wet black earth, pebbles. The 88 has all the classic characteristics and elegant finish one comes to expect from Pichon Lalande. Not their best but pretty darn good on Christmas Eve into Christmas. Merry Christmas all!!!

Today, I get to celebrate 29yrs of being alive. Figured a while back that I'd like to have a birth year wine at some point, and with Napa not being a great vintage for 1988, I searched for Bordeauxs. Many thanks to @Mark Flesher
for helping me hunt this down!

I was astounded at how this bottle seemed to have been stored. The bottle looked pristine...unbelievable. Once poured in to the decanter, there was hardly any brown color to this wine. Still displayed a beautiful purple with slight ruby hues. At first whiff, it was still sleeping quite a bit. First taste affirmed that, though I could already tell I had nothing to worry about in terms of how it would end up tasting due to how it was stored. Earthy and fig notes up front. After about 15mins, some cranberry notes came around and the finish started improving. At about the 30min mark, this hit stride and brought some black tea and very faint hints of blackberry to the palate, with a beautiful lingering finish. This wine changed about 3 times over 30mins and showed it still has some years to it. Amazing to me how wine can sleep for 29yrs, and within 30mins, show you it's still got it. What an absolute treat!

And happy birthday to my birthday buddy
