The 2001 Château Mouton Rothschild is wonderful showing from a challenging vintage in the left bank of Bordeaux. Composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, this opens with vivid aromatics of dark fruits, leather, damp earth and wet gravel all developing in the glass. On the palate this possesses a gorgeous silky texture, with outstanding balance and notable concentration considering the coolness of the vintage. While the 2001 is certainly enticing at this stage, it is lacking some of the characteristics that collectors might expect from a classic vintage of Mouton. Nonetheless, this is still an excellent wine, which drinking beautifully right now and should go on to provide another decade of enjoyment. Drink 2019-2029-93

A more restrained, denser mouton nose here, somewhat closed but there is a detectable, dense core of dark cherry, blackcurrant fruit but also a deep red currant coming through with scorched earth and burnt ends.
Palate is balanced with very approachable, lilting red berry fruit that still has some sweetness to it. Classy red fruited length.

I haven't had this vintage in quite a while and it's evolved quite nicely.

On the nose, the 2001 seemed promising after being decanted for 45 minutes- floral, dark cherry, cedar, light old leather, a touch of glycerin- but disappointing on the palate. I found it linear and tannic. It never really opened fully with layered complexity. It is fully mature but was not my favorite.

This Bordeaux is rich and complex with tannins subdued compared to the 2005. It’s an elegant wine with earthy flavors and hints of tobacco that can be drank with or without food.
