Château du Retout
Le Retout Blanc Gros Manseng Blend
Bright yellow gold. Inviting nose of yellow apple and balsa wood. Medium full palate confirms the nose with the apple taking on a quince-y tone and with a rough mineral note mid palate. Firm, southwest acidity. Moderately long finish. A white for red drinkers, with structure and complexity to match a broad range of hearty cuisines. Want white with your steak? Try this. Drink now through 2031.

Jun 15th, 2024Star bright gold. Abundant nose of baked quince and lanolin. Medium bodied palate echoes the nose adding layers of white flowers and rock (not stone) with a flash of white pepper on the medium long finish. Medium plus acidity. A classic white from Le Sud-Ouest that’s ready for rich Basque and Castelnaudary fare as well as hearty American white wine dishes. And if you’re the type that “doesn’t drink red,” this is a white you can take to the steakhouse (when it’s fully safe to go). Drink now through 2023.

Apr 15th, 2021Star bright straw gold in the glass. Nose of baked quince and citrus rind. Echoed on the medium-bodied palate with stony minerals and underripe white peach. Firm acidity throughout as expected from this solid Sud-Ouest white. Pork chops, cassoulet, or even light cuts of beef with Béarnaise will pair nicely. Drink now through 2023.

Oct 31st, 2019This Vin de France (not Bordeaux, though by a fine Bordeaux producer) is a bright and deep gold in the glass. Nose is shy but yields dark peach and dried flowers. The medium-bodied palate echoes the nose adding grapefruit rind, fresh straw, and a sharp brûlée. Acidity is as firm as they come placing this squarely in the realm of Le Sud-Ouest. As such, it cries out for foods of the richer kind. Roasted poultry, cassoulet, firm white fish, cream sauces, soft to medium cheeses; all would be excellent pairs. Now through 2025.

Apr 26th, 2019Very interesting blend of grapes! 41.5% Gros Manseng, 37% Sauvignon Gris, 13% Savagnin, 8.5% Mondeuse Blanche. Pretty aromatics of jasmine, lemon zest, and white flowers and a nice straw color to the wine. The pallet is high in acid, and full of bright citric fruits, creme fresh, lime, and light mineral tones to the finish. Would be lovely with oysters - not a wine you'd expect from Bordeaux necessarily but the Sauvignon Gris brings it back home.

Jan 29th, 2017Very complex and powerful aromas of ripe pear, a lot of butter and cream... Fresh and lite taste quite opposite to complex and powerful aromas. Very interesting style for those who likes complex smells and easy drinking well going wines.

Dec 24th, 2015A lovely interesting and fresh white blend of 52% Gros Manseng, 32% Sauvignon Gris, 9% Mondeuse Blanche, 7% Savagnin. This delightful blend has a light gold color, a citrus nose with a touch of grapefruit, flowers, minerals and a hint of tropical fruit, medium body, with a supporting fresh acidity and a delicious finish, my score 87, drink 2015-2020
