A bunch of friends came over last night. A few wine bums and one guy who knew nothing about wine, so I asked him to pull bottles out of my cellar and serve them to us blind (my best bottles are in cabinets). This was really tasty, with pencil shavings and cherries on the nose, and racy acidity (in a good way). So much so that I thought it was Portuguese:-& Steve pinned it as an ‘82 Cru Bourgeois from St Estephe or Pauillac, which was quite something given how atypical it was.

Nice, complex, full bodied, yet not too bold.

Interesting to find this on a wine list as I don't see it very often and have four bottles of the '82 kicking back in the cabinet for imminent drinking. It was good but generally quite a muted effort. Is the chateau perhaps situated between the graves ridges of St Estephe? Or is it simply closed at the moment? In any case, it was a good food wine - plenty of tannin and acidity to go with the veal-stuffed octopus but rather lacking in fruit, on nose as well as palate.

Not bad at all. Over the top and seriously underwhelmed by the company but not a bad drop. Well-heeled blackcurrent compote with a healthy ceded and tobacco nose. Just a bit hard to sing after Pavarotti.

Really great wine! Drank it with a coq au Vin and it was an excellent pairing.
