Château Barreyres
Cru Bourgeois Haut-Médoc Red Bordeaux Blend
Haut-Médoc, Médoc, Bordeaux, France
2017 vintage. Unexpectedly, this might be my favourite Barreyres vintage. Intense nose with blackberries and blueberries, and a much more discrete oak than usual. Very good fruit concentration, ripe tannin, and good fresh length. Great value at 13.90 euro! Abv. 13%

Nov 25th, 20252022 vintage. Owned by Pierre Castel. Probably 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. Red and black fruits, and smokey oak. Supple, round mouthfeel, good value. Personally, I would prefer a lighter oak toasting, if you like toasted oak, you might rate this higher. Good value in any case. Abv. 13,5%

Feb 24th, 20252016 vintage. This big estate (240 hectares with 109 hectares under vine) is owned since 1971 by the huge Castel group and it's planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) and Merlot. While they pride themselves on Margaux-like terroir, to me this is not about the finesse you'd expect from such a statement. Nevertheless this is a well-made Haut-Médoc with cassis, black cherry and coffee in the nose. Good ripe dark fruit concentration in the mouth, balanced by the acidity with slightly rustic tannin. Lacks a bit of personality maybe, but a solid wine that should age well. Give it a few years to round off the rough edges. Good value at around 12 euro.

Very tannic, rich cherries but no complexity. A little disappointing! Makes me want to open Ron’s bottle of Lamborn! 🍷

Very nice. Probably could have done with another couple of years in the bottle, but after some time left decanted this was a nice wine.

Decided to give this another try. Just six months earlier, it was hard to drink. Now, it's quite good. Leather, spice and herbaceous aromas. Meaty black fruits on the palate with lingering soft chewy tannins. The great thing about wine is it's living and changing.

Fragrant aromas of tobacco and dark fruits belies the initial harshness right after the bottle was opened. The harsh tannins soften after decanted an hour, however, it's a bit disjointed with lots of apparent wood overpowering the fruit. Still shows promise and I hope that a couple more years of bottle age will better integrate the flavors. I hope so; I have 5 more bottles.
