At the Penfolds Californian Collection Dinner at the Downs Club on Monday night. This is their brand new French Champagne venture with Thienot - a vintage Cuvée from 2012. Initially white flowers, citrus and sliced apple notes. Limited notes. A delicate Champagne with a creamy nutty texture. A better summer than a winter Champers I would venture to say. Very good nonetheless. Technical details: 50/50 Pinot Noir/Chardonnay (I would not have picked this), Dosage of 4 grams per litre; Full malolactic.

Personally, I wouldn't pay the recommended retail price of AUD280 for this champagne, but at half that, it was well worth what it delivered. Open from the get go and certainly complex, I believe this would get better with time.

Intense bouquet of pear, ginger, tobacco, brioche, marzipan, white florals, and fresh herbs. The palate was soft, but not necessarily broad. There's enough acidity, but I would have liked more cut. Technically, it's balanced though. Lots of yellow stone fruits and nutty notes. Finishes quite long with smoked cream and honey elements.

Left some to taste over the next two days and it seems air brought more focus to the fruit in the nose - apple, pear, and peach. The palate had a more obvious citric zing, but the notes were generally the same. A nice wine and one I wouldn't pick Dom over.
