Casa Especias
Jumilla Monastrell Blend
2011 (40% Monastrell, 30% Syrah, 30% Tempranillo) Yup, that's exactly what it is. All the scraps thrown together, at the end of harvest. On the level of, yet Far more drinkable than Rex Goliath. Very concentrated saffron on the nose, masking hot dusty tannin encrusted metalic notes, red violet berry notes, and screaming acidity. Thanks for this "buy one get one" gem, BevMo. The saffron is interesting, but, it's the metallic taste which is the turn off.

Mar 10th, 2015Color is nice dark ruby.
Nose is extremely peculiar. I was not a fan. Musty is the closest word I can come up with. Others said it was like the smoky smell of Scotch, which I'll grant if it was a particularly cheap brand. Plasticky is the first thought I had.
The musty plasticky flavor continues to the taste. Besides that it was reasonably nice citrusy and balanced, but I couldn't make it through a glass either time I tried.
Maybe the smell/flavor was supposed to evoke saffron, as depicted in the label, but that seemed like a stretch or I am just untrained. The good news is it makes last night's Petite Syrah even better by comparison.
