Carmelo Patti
Lujan de Cuyo Malbec
My last bottle brought over from Argentina and what a bottle it is. My friend tasted blind and thought Pinot noir, or even an Austrian red because it is so fleshy and fresh. A paragon of the Zelig that Malbec can be in the right hands. Carmelo Patti is a godfather of Mendoza wines & is, as far I can tell, a one man Gang of Four so it’s all about natural winemaking here: opaque Ruby, fresh red raspberries & cherries, tree bark, & a subtle grip on the back end. Tannic structure leaves a light imprint. Some imported to the states, & so worth seeking out.

Mar 14th, 2023Really fantastic expression of the varietal from Lujan de Cuyo. Had a chance to meet the man himself when I was there in 2011 and he was quite the character. Makes the wine in a simple warehouse with a garage to store barrels and cases of wine. A nice departure from the showy caves and opulent facilities elsewhere. 👍🏼👍🏼

Oct 13th, 2020A little blast from the past to bring back memories of our trip in 2011....Carmelo makes this wine out of a very modest facility but produces a more Old World style than many of his neighbors. Reminded me of an aged Cahors....

Jan 6th, 2018A very well respected small producer. This too may have suffered freezer shock as was put in deep freeze briefly by my host-& this is even a more delicate wine than most. It was also sandwiched btw two robust more traditional reds. In the end it was just meh, but w all the aforementioned caveats

Nov 15th, 2014One of the best malbecs from Argentina. It hás the seductive aromas from the grape, soft tanins, but a great acidity that puts everything right

Jan 13th, 2014This is estate grown juice. A small winery owned by one of argentina's most respected enologosts.

Oct 3rd, 2013Absolutely delicious - one of the wines I’ve been most surprised of recently. Would never have guessed Argentinian Malbec blind - has a real old world character. Probably would have guessed something Italian with the excellent fruit/earth balance and the great lifting acid on the finish. Really very nice, and quite a value at $28.
