What I love about Rosé is that it can be made in such a diverse range of styles and from a wide range of grape varieties. Which means you can get sweet to bone-dry tipples, super pale peach to deep pink coloured wines and the flavours can be anything from earthy to fruity. It’s an exciting wine style!

This 2017 ‘Salento’ Rosé from Cantine de Falco is no exception. It hails from the ‘heel’ of Italy’s 🇮🇹 boot, aka Puglia and is made from the Negroamaro grape 🍇 variety.

I received this as a #sample from the lovely folk at @goodpairdays (thank you!).

Negroamaro is native to southern Italy and particularly notorious with Salento, the peninsula which we visualise as the heel of Italy. Typically it’s made into red wines which are very deep in colour. The name means ‘black and bitter’ - but don’t let that put you off, especially when it’s made into a Rosé like this...

I found it an orange-y peach shade on the eye. On the nose it’s like lemon 🍋 zest mixed with raspberries with a bit of fresh herbs 🌿 thrown in the mix. While in the mouth it’s fruity with a nice dry acidity and almost tannic back palate. Very refreshing with apricot, orange and pomegranate flavours standing out for us.
