Cantina Tomaso Gianolio
Superiore Barbera d'Alba
Love this wine. So classic. Black plums, black cherries, dried cherries, herb and spice. Palate has just killer acidity and freshness. Energy for days. That’s the standout aspect of this wine. Terrific blackberry fruit and a lovely savory, gamey element pervades throughout and then the cleansing acidity finishes it off. So good.

Jul 15th, 2022Such a good Barbers. Gorgeous berry and cherry fruit. So pure. Floral and a bit grapey. Hint of rubber. Leather. Love it. So classic. Palate is ripe and juicy with lovely zippy freshness. Wonderful mouthfeel and just a wonderful gulpful of fruit. So lively and energetic.

Jul 22nd, 2019Davide makes a killer Barbera. Fantastic nose of cherries and berries. Lots of spice. Very friendly. Sense of more depth than normal inexpensive Barbera. Nice richness and so much cleansing acidity with lovely fruit and terrific balance. Exactly what I want in a Barbera.

Aug 13th, 2018Really very nice - first time having his Barbera. Surprisingly ready without a significant decant. Was a bit worried about heat on the finish but was pleasantly surprised - would have guessed this was closer to 13% than 15%. Quite seamless on the palate. Nice pairing with a simple meal of grilled sausages and radicchio. Excellent value.

1 person found it helpfulMar 21st, 2022Nose has washed cherries, sliced cherries, wet violets, old licorice candy and tanned leather. A trailing note of alcohol heat, but seems to be dissipating with more air. (14% ABV)
Palate has sweetened-dried cherries, well stored cigar, dry-crushed granite and moist soil. Velvety smooth, yet energetic on the finish (velvet Elvis painting comes to mind), minerals linger on the very long finish. Classy. Decanted +2H.

Last bottle and haven’t had in over a year. Love this bottling. Gorgeous wet earth, tobacco, bright cherries, tar, leather. Terrific. Juicy, spicey, rich yet energetic. Red cherry fruit glides along the palate backed up by nice mineral and earthy sweetness and huge minerals. Delicious. Really pays to age some wines 2-3 years.

As this opens it has this silky blackberry amaro thing going on. Terrific texture.
Extremely elegant for a superiore. It has a bit more density and seriousness than a regular s/s barbera but none of the wood and booze that they often have.
Bought from fass selections.

Mad love for this. Cherry. Cherry licorice. Licorice finish. But perfect balance. One of the most delicious wines of the year. Brighter than most superiores. I could drink a case of this... In a night. Had it with chicken with juniper berry sauce. Amazing. In a rational world anyone with space would buy 5 cases a year. Bought from fass selections.
