Rio Madre Rioja Graciano
Interesting grape. Full-bodied, some tannin, low acid, flavours of chocolate, coffee, liquorice, black fruits, cola, and black cardamom.

Chocolate, leather, animal musk, and a touch of brett. The palate felt super flabby on day 1, with little acid or tannin to give structure to the rich fruit, but oddly enough feels much more integrated with tannins speaking a little stronger on day 2. This would benefit from at least an hour or two of decanting after opening. Unfortunately the finish is slightly bitter and not especially long or satisfying. There’s plenty of interest here for the price but there are some small issues keeping this from being a great wine.

Nov 25th, 2016Deep ruby in color with a purplish rim.
Sour nose of raspberries, wild flowers, strawberries, earth, leather, forest floor, smoke, green pepper and peppercorn.
Medium plus in body with high acidity and long legs.
Tart on the palate with raspberries, cranberries, tart strawberries, pomegranate, oak, licorice, vanilla, spices, earth, leather, green pepper, coffee and peppercorn.
Medium finish with soft tannins and black pepper.
This unique Rioja is made from 100% Graciano grapes. Unique, because these grapes are usually used for blending in Rioja.
It is spicy and earthy, but also tart and unbalanced, and doesn't have enough fruit for the acidity. Not for me.
Better food wine than a sipping one. I paired it with cheeses and light appetizers.
14% alcohol by volume.

I love rioja but not sure ive had (m)any straight graciano before this. I got a good amount of spice on the nose and finish. In between were gobs of ripe plum and dark berries and just a touch of grill fire, whatever that means. Thought there was a little sluphur or reduction at first, but it sorted itself out. Cheers to happy endings!
