Bodegas Montecillo
Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo

Subtle with dill, savory with leather, sour with cherries and sweet with chocolate sauce (too much new oak maybe?) As others noted, really good food wine.

Black cherry, maybe a little cola. Some cedar and perhaps lilac. Fairly lean and acidic with moderate tannins.

This bottle is only empty because I’ve poured it into the drain. Basic Rioja. There is nothing Gran or Grand about this. It’s not terrible, it’s just Crianza complexity in a gran reserva.

Feb 20th, 2018Nice value priced Rioja, although I think the Robert Parker Wine Advocate rating is a bit high. Very spicy when first opened. After breathing for an hour mellows out to a robust Tempranillo with a bit of barrel infused licorice undertones. I really prefer the Grenache's coming out of Spain right now. A bit harder to find at my local shops because the restaurants are snapping them up!
