I refrained from making a call on this blind because the nose was too madeirised to have any varietal character. Remarkably, the palate was better and was notably fresher than that of the 2003 Torbreck The Steading. Dried fruits, layered in with notes of leather, earth, and a touch of chocolate in the finish. The acidity was still quite alive and tannin structure intact, appearing dusty in the cheeks. In hindsight, despite the wine's condition, the notes do point towards a classic Spanish Tempranillo, but as with previous notes, I'm too unfamiliar with the variety and region to have made the link.

Apr 18th, 2022Nose is beautifully incorporated dry red, black and blue fruits with vanilla, leather, nutmeg, and coriander.
Palate brings big tannins, more of a decaying fruit character-- blackberry, raspberry, prune. Almost a potpourri like basket of spices. Very stemmy/seedy. Bigger fan of the nose.
