Bodega Y Cavas Weinert
Mendoza Malbec

An unusual wine for Argentina, this Malbec from Luján de Cuyo spent eight-and-a-half years in old oak before it was bottled in May 2019. Dominated by the aging, it presents a nose of peat, camphor, black olive and dry flowers; fruit is very much an afterthought. Well-developed, conveying a gentle feel, a silky texture and active tannins that lightly brush the gums to augur a long life span. A sunny Burgundy made in the old style to last for a very long time. (Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous, October 2020)

Very light for a Malbec, which I liked. Would have given it a higher ranking but it was just a little bit too tart on the finish imo.

Good dark red. Dried redcurrant, red plum and cherry on the nose, with notes of leather, geranium, licorice and old barrel. Juicy and intense, with strong acidity giving a penetrating character to the flavors of red cherry, plum, currant and leather. Finishes with smooth tannins, good cut and length, and a building dusty oak quality. Very old-style malbec. (Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, March 2013)

I know, I know. Argentinian Malbec is a little pedestrian. You know, all this Jammy fruit, Oak, alcohol and lack of structure. So if that's how you feel, and you don't know this wine, you might want to check it out.
