Bloomer Creek Vineyard
Tanzen Dame Barrow Vineyard Reserve Dry Riesling
So this is my wine of year, 2018. On sight: a distressing shade of brown, with obvious floaters and heavy sediment. However, all that follows is trompe a l’oeil of the highest order, with oxidative elements suffused with freshness and reductive elements that express themselves in layers of complexity rather than primordial stink. Intense aromas and flavors of poached pear, star anise, porcini broth and white tea rise and fade within a frame of RS somewhere between trocken and feinherb. On the palate: ethereal texture, presence and length, with a weight reminiscent of some of Julien Meyer’s best Rieslings: simultaneously commanding and feathery. There are no primary or obvious elements of classic Riesling, yet you know it’s Riesling because no other grape could be a vehicle for this kind of brilliance. Just the barest hint of Manzanilla and sea salt on the complex finish. I really don’t know much about this winery, but I’ve never had anything from them that’s less than incredible. I’d place this next to ‘78 Marquis de Laguiche Montrachet, ‘82 DRC Montrachet, ‘59 Huet Vouvray Haut-Lieu and ‘76 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese in my “greatest whites” list. It IS that good, and I’ve been trying to talk myself out of that thought since April, when I consumed it from a paper cup in a hotel room. #bloomercreek #flxriesling

2 people found it helpfulDec 31st, 2018Fresh honey, apricot preserves, “smells like jam,” bae says from the sofa.
Liquid honeycomb, slight effervescence and slight petrol note round it for the perfect balanced sip.
Love the straw golden reflection in the glass, too.

Honey, oranges, mangoes, peaches. All the tropicals.
Ah man, Bloomer Creek just makes me happy. Every time I see their bottles at a retailer, I pretty much have to cop it. Today it was from Frankly Wines in TriBeCa.
Great selection and knowledge at this shop.
A little character in this one, reminding me a bit of an orange wine. Dry and got a nice minerality, but also a honeycomb sweetness and finally a bit of a zing (kind of like the herby citrusy crossover that pine needles have). I went on a guided hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Biologist guide pointed out all the things we could eat in the forest. And we did. No one got sick. My dad told long, unnecessary stories to the other troop members. Ah, simpler times.
This is a glass where you close your eyes, everything else melts away, and you enjoy the simplicity, the balance, the crisp sips.

Revelatory. A rush of blossoming flowers on the nose, growing over an old streamed of slick, lime zested rocks but also there's an oil leak upstream. The palate is lime pith rubbed on a razor wrapped in feathers. Elegant texture but somehow ethereally light, with a ton of salty minerality, kerosene, and just a little oxidation. How can one grape even be like this?
