Big Table Farm
Wirtz Vineyard Edelzwicker
It's a lovely wine to be sure, and for meal planning purposes, a very versatile selection. However, I found this vintage a little lacking in some departments... I'll elaborate.
First off, the nose is really fun. An unmistakable crisp whiff of freshly cut red apple. Down to the slightly chlorine note that you get from whatever it is they treat apples with. A little longer in the glass and you start to get some white flower, and citrus.
The texture is a little flat. It lacks a certain "oomf" and it may be due to the very warn vintage. The acid is just not lively and I miss that from knowing this wine in previous vintages.
Also, it seems to be missing something in the middle... It's very linear when I was hoping for round. I feel like just a liiiiitle residual sugar could have given it what it needed - but alas it is bone dry, and that leads it to a short, flat, slightly bitter finish.
It could probably compliment a mid-dinner cheese plate since that would help mask the hole in the middle but even then I wouldn't go too creamy on the cheese because it doesn't have the cutting acid. Go with a hard pecorino or manchego.

Peaches like the kind from a can from when I was little. In a good way. Plus pear, white flowers and citrus. Smooth and zingy.

Jan 23rd, 2018Very cool natural wine from Oregon. Nose of white peach and baby powder, bright and fresh in the mouth with stone fruits and minerals. Good acidity. Medium-long finish.

Jun 20th, 2016Another interesting wine tonight! Elderflower, vanilla, spices, limoncello, rainwater.
Not red, but can't hurt. Tighten it up in the 2nd and 3rd Caps. Holtby great as always.
