Bright garnet with good clarity, showing minimal extraction. The most transparent of the three Borghetto cuvées today in terms of showing delineated flavors and evidence of oak. Sweet spices hit the nose immediately along with subtle fruit and mineral accent. Tart cherry, stone fruit and even a little citrus quality to this one (blood orange, tangerine). Also finding notes of anise, dried flowers, balsamic herb and the peppermint candy finish that I’ve noted in each of these cuvées. Not quite as nervy and austere as the Billacio or as earthy as the Montiago, but sharing more subtle characteristics with each. Some additional bottle age is no doubt showing in this one.

2022/4. This had a bit of raisiny character on the nose which I’ve never had in an Il Borghetto before (though it’s not like I’ve had every wine in every vintage), especially on the first day. However, somehow, it didn’t feel too heavy on the palate - the tangy acidity balanced it out and there wasn’t a sense of untoward sweetness. With air the heavy fruit loosened a bit to reveal blackberry pie, fresher berries, orange, etc.
