Attilio Contini
Vernaccia di Oristano

Had it November 2010.
Bought in a street market in Rome for 5euros, I had no expectations, instead...
Great nose of Nocino liquor, almond, minerally and loads of other scents.
A little bittery in the aftertaste, but altogether very pleasant and fascinating.

Considering the difficulties in raising authentic Vernacce d'Oristano made-up in few samples by several farmers in Sardinia only for their family or personal use, this one from Contini seems a fair compromise to dig up in the market. This particular bottle had the cork a little too dry so that the typical oxidation of the Sherry style wine produced with the yeast Flor, was a bit "above the lines" sticking out an exstinguished soul!

Aug 25th, 2015This thing is gorgeous, a little known gem that could compete with Jura at 2-3x the price. Nosebleeds with ample dried apricot, almonds, orzata/almond milk, some ginger, some baking spice. However, the oxidative notes are wonderfully balanced by a punchy salinity that keeps the whole thing alive. At 10C it hits a peak of expressiveness and drinkability. Closer to 15 and the 15.5% alcohol starts saying hello

Lovely oxidative wine. Nutty almond notes, dates, golden raisins.

A disappearing wine that is a real wonder. A sherry Italian style from a beautiful island. Well integrated 15.5% alcohol, nutty, still vivid (13yrs old) with dried apricot and dates scents. A rare pearl that worth every penny!
