Domaine Grand Veneur Les Champauvins Côtes du Rhône Red Rhone Blend
Starting to show a little secondary brick color on the rim... Scents of menthol, candied plum, rose pedal, licorice, crushed granite and peppercorns. Slurpy smooth, with tobacco, spice box, fresh herbs, juicy plum and black raspberries. Tannins are integrated but present, acidity shines and carries into a rich finish. Drink now or over the next year. Top of my list for QPR Wine. 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre ... one last note: This vineyard sits just 3 meters from the northern boarder of the Chateauneuf du Pape AOC, just across from the Beaucastel vineyards, hence the winery calls this “baby Chateauneuf.”

Aug 14th, 2018OK, but not at all great. I can't tell whether this was a bad bottle or if the wine is characteristically like this, but the wine started with a bitter, corky overtone and finished with a sour note. In between there were some nice Rhone fruit, a little bit of tannin, and decent earth notes. The wine opened a bit after a while and mellowed somewhat - which is why I rated it as highly as I did. I think this is probably overall a decent wine and maybe this bottle was mishandled. Maureen says "unfortunate aftertaste."

Jul 22nd, 2015Terrific wine, drinking very well right now. Earthy and rich, with a creamy, silky and spicy note at the end. Still a little too sweet and fruity, but not overly so. The nose is pleasant and not overpowering of alcohol. I really like it.

Oct 17th, 2014Not too bad. Not as spicy or smoky as I like, but not too fruity either.
