This is Alain Graillots Australian venture in Heathcote Victoria. Interesting to compare with his Crozes Hermitage from a few nights ago. This showed better IMO. Lovely spice and dried meat. More like Northern Rhone than Heathcote. Earthy and savoury. Showed better than a bottle in December 2019.

Feb 25th, 2020Similar notes to 117 weeks ago although on this occasion it showed better than then. The impression of trying to over finesse wines from an area like Heathcote remains, however it did show meaty and spicy notes and presented as more Northern Rhone in style than Heathcote. This is Alain Graillots Australian venture.

This has always been a wine to decant to blow off rubbery notes in its youth and now some more complex reductive and bottle age notes. That reduction is hard to ignore but plenty of good structure and mature fruit still makes for interesting and satisfying drinking, especially alongside a perfectly grilled scotch fillet. 👍🏼

Mar 26th, 2019This is Northern Rhone winemaker, Alain Graillot's Australian venture using Heathcote Shiraz and calling it Syrah. Was expecting more from this combination. Initial vanilla oak aromas lacking in fruit depth. Picked too early? A little thin and hollow with high acidity. It seems like the French trying to tame Heathcotes big flavours and not succeeding - not in this vintage at least. A reference point for traditional Heathcote is Jasper Hill who, apart from their own Cuvees have produced an acceptable joint venture with another Rhone legend in Chapoutier.

Made by famed Rhone winemaker Alain Graillot in Heathcote, Central Victoria, an area known for full throttle Shiraz. However, as expected, this is much more restrained on the ripe fruit characters. Notes of hung meat and a touch of blood. Faint cherry on the palate with mainly savoury mineral characters. Shows the versatility of the Shiraz grape and the different results that can be achieved.

Nov 16th, 2016Graillots Australian Syrah. Not your normal Heathcote blockbuster. More restrained and the better for it. This example a little cold (mid July in Toowoomba!!) but showing more Northern Rhone nuances. Hints of liquorice spice and game. Excellent. 17.5+.
