Jan 20th, 2020Nicely balanced, red fruit, plums, smoke, graphite. Good mouthfeel. Clearly all the stops are pulled out to make this. Impressive given Virginia has otherwise been short notable wine for quite a few centuries.

Apr 27th, 2018Virginia isn't known for its wine. RdV are clearly trying to change this. Sweet (expensive) oak defines this wine more than anything else. It's well blended for sure, and texturally it's very elegant. But there's not quite enough depth to stand up to the ambition.

Oct 20th, 2017The 2010 Lost Mountain by RdV is decidedly more complex than the 2015 I tried. Better year? Goodness knows. Maybe the wine just gets better with age. Could be the case with the expensive oak integrating more seamlessly over time. This is a delicious Bordeaux blend and never in a million years would I have guessed that it was from Virginia.

This, my first wine from Virginia was very impressive. I find it interesting to think about how Thomas Jefferson failed at propgating any of the 24 vinifera varieties he brought home to Monticello and also how wine wasn't really on the map when I lived in VA for a decade in the 1990s. A wonderful, perfectly balanced, delicious VA wine can now truly await you. Will keep my eyes open for more greats from VA.
