Philip Shaw

N° 11 Orange Chardonnay 2014

Pale Lemon in colour. Some initial caramel notes, light fruited and light weight from the cool climate Orange district. On the palate under ripe nectarine with grapefruit notes - quite a delicate Chardonnay with light acids. Has Medium intensity for Its light palate weight. Philip Shaw has quite the CV as a winemaker. From Chief Winemaker at the huge Lindemans, headhunted by the Oatleys to be Chief Winemaker at Rosemount which became a world wide brand before being sold to Southcorp (now Treasury) for a fortune to the Oatleys, and a stint with Treasury all the while developing his vineyard at Orange now run by his sons and he has gone on to his next venture. He has collected International Winemaker of the Year twice in 1988 and 2000. — 2 years ago

Unfiltered Napa Valley Chardonnay 2014

Mid Lemon in colour. Vanilla oak aromas - peachy and rich. On the palate yellow peach and cream with Medium plus intensity. This style was popular in Australia in the 80’s and 90’s - think Rosemount Roxburgh and coined the style as “Dolly Parton” for obvious reasons. For lovers of full bodied Chardonnay. I hadn’t had a Chardonnay like this for a while and it was enjoyable. Ripe fruit, a touch too much oak and a great viscous texture on the palate. One of the 1001 Wines. — 2 years ago

Venus Block Orange Chardonnay 2014

See previous notes. They still apply. All the hallmarks of modern Australian Chardonnay. Nutty leesy aromas with rock melon notes - from the cool climate district near the city of Orange. A light to medium weight palate. Proving that the Orange/Tumbaramba district is a great area for cool climate Chardonnay with Penfolds sourcing fruit from here for their top Chardonnays like Yattarna. Also Phillip Shaw (former winemaker for Rosemount when they were famous) has set up a winery here under his own name. — a year ago
