As Phipps the brewery says its IPA is brewed to an authentic 1930s recipe. It pours a nice golden colour with medium carbonation and a frothy head that dissipates quite quickly. The beer sees the blend of Goldings and Fuggles hops with malt to give the drinker a good full-bodied English beer.
Nice elements of malt, bitterness with hints of caramel that gives a slight sweet character with a gentle hoppy taste.
It is very much a early 20th century traditional IPA rather than the heavily hopped New England IPAs of today.
A delight to drink and one of my favourites from a brewery that has resurrected the old Phipps and Northampton Brewing Company beers. — 2 years ago
Phipps NBC Red Star is a traditional recipe that dates back to the 1950s. A favourite of the Cobbler industry that had its heart in Northampton and Northamptonshire, it was drunk county wide after a day making shoes.
A good mile, malty ale, with a nice refreshing taste that gives a little nuttyness and hints of caramel. 3.8ABV, ideal for a session ale. — 2 years ago
Phipps NBC have taken the hops used in the traditional Mild and with a tweak of hops created this lovely dark ale. It is smooth with medium carbonation and a nice tan head. Malty, with some hops and a little sweetness. If you like NE IPA, this may not be for you, but fans of Porter, Stout, and Mild, and dark Amber ales will enjoy this.

This Phipps brewery Double Crown beer was specially brewed for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee based on a similar recipe for the 1952 Coronation.
Belgian biscuit malt with Ernest and Barbe Rouge hops gives a balanced beer that is slightly hoopy with good malt backnotes. — 2 years ago
A very pleasant stout, that as the brewer's themselves say, is not as bitter as some stouts. It is smooth and malty with a creamy head with a good all-round flavour, and it is nice to savour by the bottle or in one of the pubs that stock this.
Ratliffe's is from the Phipps-Northampton Brewery Company [Phipps NBC], and in its old life in WW2, Ratliffe’s Stout was sent out as a gift by Phipps to the Northamptonshire Regiment who were a part of the famed Desert Rats and they continued to supply the regiment as they fought through North Africa and Italy.
Try it you won't be disappointed. — 2 years ago
Cobblers Ale, brewed in Northampton for the shoe industry workers of the late 19th to mid20th century, Phipps NBC, has brought back this beer.
Provided in old imperial pint sized bottles it is a lovely mix of hops and malt that delivers a fresh easy drinking beer.

Lovely brown ale that has been resurrected by the modern NBC Phipps brewery. Brown ale and this beer itself was hugely popular nationally [and locally to Phipps] in the 1950s and 1960s.
This has malt, hops and a creamy taste that makes for great traditional British pint. — 3 years ago
Very enjoyable zin. Nice big wine, went great with some nachos. — 8 years ago

A very nice Mild. Smooth, dark brown with malt and hints of caramel.
The joy of this beer, aside from it being in the footsteps of the traditional mild, is that this recipe and the original brews were all done by the brewer's apprentice.
Foundry Mild was so popular in the Brewery Tap that it has entered full-time production being available in draft and bottles.
Cheers to the apprentice! — a year ago
