Karas – Grand Karas Red Blend – 2017 Armavir – Armenia 🇦🇲
Overview A flagship red blend from Karas, rooted in Armenia’s ancient winemaking heritage and crafted in the volcanic soils of the Armavir region. Blend composition: 60% Armenian Syrah, 20% Montepulciano, 20% Cabernet Franc. A wine that balances Old World structure with New World generosity, aged in a combination of Armenian and French oak to enhance depth and complexity.
Aromas & Flavors Expressive layers of dark plum, black cherry, and blackberry lead the nose, followed by black pepper, dried herbs, cocoa powder, and subtle smoky nuances. Secondary notes of leather, graphite, and baking spice unfold with air, reflecting both terroir and thoughtful élevage.
Mouthfeel Medium-to-full bodied with polished tannins and a firm, confident structure. The palate shows excellent balance between ripe fruit concentration and savory freshness, finishing long with gentle spice and earthy persistence.
Food Pairings Grilled lamb chops, beef kebabs, braised short ribs, roasted eggplant with spices, mushroom-based dishes, or aged semi-hard cheeses.
Verdict A compelling and distinctive red that showcases Armenia’s serious potential for world-class blends. Complex yet approachable, this is a wine that tells a story of place, history, and modern precision in one glass.
Did You Know? Armenia is considered one of the world’s oldest wine regions, with archaeological evidence of winemaking dating back over 6,000 years, making Grand Karas a modern expression of one of wine’s original homelands. — 3 months ago
Really lovely Chenin Blanc, which is unusual as not normally the biggest fan. Tropical fruits, rounded finish, moorg creaminess to it. Lovey. — 5 years ago
