Brooks Road Shiraz 2013

Wow. A reminder that I need to drink more Aussie Shiraz. Show stopping aromas of baked, spiced, black plum, campfire smoke, blackberries and black currant, date, bay leaf, licorice, cedar, leather, mocha, eucalyptus, with the slightest hint of something raw, feral and a little filthy that I like in my Syrah, but that most new world examples miss. Round, full and silky on the palate. A powerful, riper and higher alcohol expression of Syrah for sure, but balanced and exquisite as the best big wines are. — 10 days ago

Mullan Road Cellars

Columbia Valley Red Blend 2013

Very deep Ruby red, with aromas of dark fruit and sweet spice. On the palate, the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, shows ripe dark fruit, blackberries and plums with a touch of oak, smoke and toast. The wine spent 16 months in 40% new French and American oak. Full-bodied, nice balance with integrated tannins. Tasting well now. — 20 days ago

Oakley Road Vineyard Mataro 2018

Mourvèdre Madness Monday. Common threads: tart blackberry, characteristic rustic meatiness/ferrous quality and reduction.

Mataro from Zin master Joel Peterson. Richest, most forward and fullest bodied of the bunch by far. Extracted but balanced. Tannins are plush and wooly. Fresh violets, smoke and licorice.

I love your notes…what’s a wooly tannin? 😊

@Eric big time tannins that are grippy and mouth coating, but in a pleasant way. They border on rustic/rough, but are just ripe enough (often found in big extracted wines that are done well). I think of wine textures - especially tannin - in terms of the fabric (silk, velvet, even velour) and the way it feels against your skin, so wool seemed like a natural extension of that. One of my WSET instructors used the term once and it has stuck with me ever since.
