The Mascot

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Very enjoyable Cabernet from a top producer. Wanted to keep it for a few years but heard the dog barking and decided to let him out. Great aromas out of the bottle with blueberry, blackberry and sweet violets and lavender plus a distinct bubblegum essence. Tastes great after thirty minutes, very complex and a little savoury with blackcurrant, coffee and pepper. After 90 minutes it has developed lots of sweeter fruit and a collection of spices and is less dry on the palate. A top quality wine which is highly recommended. Rating is as of now but I have no doubt that this is a 9.7+ in a couple of years — 8 years ago

Barking Frog

Elerding Barbera

Always see Barking Frog on winner and high rating lists in the press. It comes through with the boldness and husky taste characteristics of Italian Barbara. Not over powering but rich and artful for the palate. — 10 years ago

First experience with this wine. It's a great wine no doubt. But the price turns me off. Bold balanced and gripping, throw a steak at this barking dog! — 13 years ago

Winterlandschaft

Glühwein

Winterlandschaft – Glühwein (Mulled Wine)
Germany 🇩🇪

Overview
Glühwein is Germany’s traditional winter warmer, a spiced red wine typically enjoyed at Christmas markets. Unlike regular table wine, this one comes pre-spiced and ready to heat, just pour gently into a pot (don’t boil!) and serve steaming hot.

Aromas & Flavors
The nose bursts with festive spice, cinnamon sticks, cloves, orange zest, and a whisper of star anise. On the palate, it’s warming, slightly sweet, and packed with flavors of mulled cherries, baked apples, dried cranberries, and holiday spice medley.

Mouthfeel
Medium-bodied with a velvety texture. The sweetness is balanced by the spice, creating a cozy, round mouthfeel that lingers with a warming finish.

Food Pairing
Perfect on its own as a winter treat. It also pairs with gingerbread cookies, roasted nuts, fruitcake, or savory bites like roasted sausages and cheese fondue.

Verdict
A ready-to-drink festive classic, cozy, nostalgic, and perfect for cold nights. It’s not meant for deep analysis but for pure enjoyment with friends around the fire or strolling through a Christmas market atmosphere. Cheers!

Did you know?
Glühwein literally means “glow-wine,” a name dating back to when it was heated with glowing red-hot irons in medieval times. Today, it’s a holiday tradition across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Barking Rocks

Casena Merlot Blend 2007

Not a bad drop. Owners wife recommended this one in substitution for my favorite Redman. Pretty good through the entire bottle and gets better as you go. Still miss the Redman though. Little bit dryer. Non acidic. No indigestion. No alcohol punch just a smooth Jesus Juice. — 10 years ago

Barking Frog

Washington Sangiovese 2013

Didn't disappoint! This wine is beyond bold. It gives a quick peppery taste that is just a hint and finishes smooth and filling. Not an award winner at this show but is one that is ready to drink and bring a smile to the taster's mouth. I liked it and that's what counts. — 10 years ago

Pinot Noir 2012

A little woody at first but irons out nicely after a half hour or so. 5 years after harvest maybe no surprise the fruit isn't at peak vibrancy, but still pretty good. Not much like a Pinot. Valle de Limari. — 10 years ago
