Pepe Mendoza Casa Agricola

Giró de Abargues

Delicious. Medium color and body. Light juicy and floral aromas. #giro grape. Pepe and I traded bottles. I asked him about this grape and I’m still awaiting a response. There’s a Giro grape on Mallorca that was recovered by some friends of mine Miquel and Toni Gelabert, but that grape is white and has gris and red mutations…this wine of Pepe from #Alicante is red and not gris. Then there’s a Giro on Sardegna but Pepe has yet to tell me if it’s the same as the Sardinian grape or not. In any case it’s somewhere between a Light Garnacha and a Trosseau noir very perfumed and soft. Highly recommendable. I drank straight away because it was too tasty but it can age for 3/5 years no problem. — 24 days ago

Natural wine from Spain. Big tropical fruit, some mild funk, dunno if this sees oak but getting vanilla, softness. Really good. Bliss Wine Imports SF. — a day ago

Palacio del Conde

Gran Reserva Valencia Tempranillo 2008

Cellar Raid with the parents. Hitting the aged cuts. This wine aged beautifully. Rich jam and overripe dark fruit aroma. Strong dried cherry, raisins, blueberries, and a hint of blackberry flavors. Notes of leather and tobacco followed by strong baking spice and vanilla flavors. Deep, rich, full body. Finishes with big balancing tannin and low acid. Dessert in a glass. Would drink again, good thing there's another in the cellar. — a month ago

Suber Nero d'Avola Blend 2017

Alder Yarrow

I probably drink too many Etna wines, so for a change here’s a Sicilian wine that is NOT from the volcano. It’s from the center of the island, near the city of Caltagirone, and it’s an unusual blend of two expected grapes (Nero d’Avola and Frappato) and one fairly unexpected one (Alicante Bouschet). Grown in dense vineyards planted with head-trained bush vines at about 1000 feet above sea level, this wine has a deep garnet color and a stony core surrounded by blackberry, licorice, and black cherry fruit. At once ripe and chiseled with acidity, this is a perfect expression of Sicily in many ways. It bears the i Vigneri stamp of consultant Salvo Foti, a good sign if there ever was one on Sicilian bottles. — 17 days ago
