Voir Dire Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

Finally getting around to posting wines from my annual Napa trip from two weeks ago. Always goes by quick! Lots of fun new stops this year.

Theorem was one of our highlights last year, so we made sure a return visit was lined up this year. Base of Diamond Mtn with one of the most beautiful properties I’ve seen. Over the last 12 months, they’ve added a couple new wines (with more to come from Moon Mountain). TRB is the winemaker.

In the running for red wine of the trip. When visiting last year, I preferred the ‘14 (ripe, balanced, savory) over the ‘15 (more acidity, touch lighter, high toned)...this ‘13 takes the best of each and marries them. This is a classic high end TRB Cabernet from a stellar vintage. Truffles raspberries, candied black cherries, cocoa dusted mixed berry pie and graphite aromatics accompanied by sweet blueberries, freshly squeezed blackberries, toffee and espresso, baking spices, and fine grained tannins. Built like a tank. Superb.

This so damn good but, I am looking forward to opening a bottle in 2025 or so.

How would you compare this to the Hawks Prey?

@Jid R : Less pop and pour. More tannic and age worthy. Lots of fruit, but plenty of savory and herbal components mixed in versus the Hawk’s Prey being very plush and open.

Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande

Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend 2003

2003 vintage. Last tasted 10.16.22 (9.1) and a relatively disappointing showing then. This time round, decanted and tasted multiple x's after 1.5 hours-3 hours. Decent sed yet less than expected. Good fill but cork seemed a tad dry. The blueberry, cocoa powder nose was there with the quintessential, P-L hallmarks. Light-medium body. A billowing, smoky initiation, then plum along with graphite and touches of cedar + espresso crema. Left me wanting just a little more and thinking a different bottle of this same P-L vintage just might yield a 9.5. This and La Mission Haut-Brion fave two red BDX producers and this did nothing to change that. Hopefully, another P-L 2003 cycles through soon enough to prove my theorem. Cube Theorem

Another nice hazy IPA from Fieldwork, hints of citrus on the nose and palette with mix of Citra, Enigma, and Mr. Rudi hops. — 3 years ago

Hundredth Monkey Red Blend 2012

A great Colorado red blend. Dark red color. Nose of boxwood and cherries, somewhat light. Medium bodied. Slightly jammy, taste of berries and slight bit of spice. Finish diminishes quickly. — 4 years ago
