Lujan De Cuyo, Mendoza

Quinto Malbec 2014

May be the age on the bottle talking, but this Malbec is singing! Medium purple on the eye with heavy blackberry and plum on the nose. On the pallet the full body is immediately apparent, some ripe dark fruit also present, chocolate and oak as well. The tannings are strong, nice balance to the wine and there is a pleasant finish. Bought this about five years ago and it is certainly a pleasant surprise. Again, lesson learned: never underestimate aging value wines, this is great. — 6 days ago

Bodega Catena Zapata

D.V. Catena Historico Mendoza Red Blend 2017

72% Malbec, 21% Bonarda, 7% Petit Verdot

Stone fruit tree. Wide range of plum and black cherry notes, stones, med+ acidity, dark coffee note, flavor profile is in the red-violet spectrum. Smooth medium body with fine tannin. Tight with slightly elevated fume. Will age gracefully. Would like to see it in 3-5 years.

Familia Zuccardi

Aluvional Paraje Altamira Malbec 2014

Smoking good. Really tight and reserved on opening, smoky, spicy, with a blanket of graphite, earth and herbs that took some time to unravel. The core of the wine was sensational - high toned, intense and hyper focused dark cherry and plum, with the herbs and spice notes still there, adding depth. Beautifully vivid and super expressive. So good with chocolate cake... — 22 days ago

Had the 2015. It’s smooth, full-bodied, lots of depth, a bit peppery and earthy. Delicious! One of my faves! — 10 days ago

Bodega Catena Zapata

Catena Mendoza Malbec 2017

An iconic Argentine wine; probably the most well-known Malbec for that matter. Big producer, a great one at that, who’s focused on quality. There’s oak, blueberry, plum and leather. You get a slight silkiness with good tanning structure, somewhat refined. Outstanding value, one of the best under twenty dollar wines I’ve had. — 20 days ago

Estate Lujan de Cuyo Malbec 1999

This 1999 has been on my basement floor for a long time. I’m not a Malbec fan and the bottle looked at me . Why not drink? I gave in yesterday. It was good. Dark ,fruity and well balanced. A joy to drink from beginning to end. I think the 20+ years paid off. — 25 days ago
