The 2016 Zakin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is an absolutely brilliant wine that was sourced from the Zakin’s southwest facing property on Howell Mountain, situated between 1,250 and 1,450 feet. The vineyard consists of three unique blocks: The Pool Block, The Upper Vineyard, and the Back Blocks, which are managed by Jim Barbour. The wine itself is simply fantastic, as it slowly begins to unwind in the glass it releases stunning aromas ripe cherries, red/dark currants, intense florals and dried spices which are underlined by a light cedar note and a lovely mineral character of crushed stones and hints of graphite dust. On the palate this medium to full-bodied red shows wonderful elegance and vibrancy, with a bright core of beautifully ripe red and dark currants, fresh florals and minerals that are framed by gorgeous velvety tannins. It continues to impress with its remarkable structure, as it all comes together seamlessly with wonderful focus and balance leading up to the precise finish that displays tremendous length. The Zakin’s along with winemaker Philip Melka and his team have crafted an utterly captivating wine, which was built to age and should continue to evolve marvelously for many years to come.
