Trump Winery
Estate Bottled Monticello Meritage
This pre-release sample is very young, but should come together with more time in the bottle or some decanting, should you decide to open it sooner rather than later. It's a Bordeaux-style blend that exhibits a softer side with its 13% ABV. It's medium ruby in color with medium body and fine tannins. On the nose and palate, there's blackcurrant, black cherry, bitter chocolate, and coffee, with a warm, spicy, tart cherry finish. (sample)

My first red wine from Virginia, so I have no frame of reference. Despite the meritage makeup (40% Merlot, 35% Cab Franc, 20% Cab Sauv, 3% Malbec, 2% Petit Verdot) I was still surprised by how much this resembled Bordeaux. Modern and polished, but still primary and in an old world style. Ironically, it's much in the mold of a young Cru Bourgeois. Medium bodied and backward, with plenty of acid, but tannin that stays with you past its usefulness. Offers plum, leather, coffee, wet earth, tobacco, and dried herbs, but only with glancing blows. That said, I'm guessing this is still somewhat of an achievement for Virginia.

Aug 30th, 2017For a Virginia wine, this is pretty solid. 40% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec, 2% Petit Credit.
