Tolpuddle Vineyard
Tasmania Chardonnay

See note on Delectable 187 weeks ago. This is my last bottle and it is superb. With age this wine has developed more stone fruit (white peach) and less citrus notes. Perfect balance with French Oak and a creamy leesy influence. As HH said “100% Malolactic fermentation but it doesn’t show “. Ticks all the boxes of an excellent modern day new world Chardonnay. Grapes are shipped in a refrigerated container from the Coal River Tasmania to the Adelaide Hills where the wine is made at Shaw and Smith (the owner of Tolpuddle).

See several previous Delectable notes, the most recent being January 2022. This is my last bottle of 2014 - has been a stellar Tasmanian Chardonnay. The leesy funk has diminished - this showed grapefruit and under ripe nectarine barely medium bodied yet M plus intensity. Just bought the 2021 vintage.

All the attributes of great modern Chardonnay. Leesy, smoky, struck match aromas. A light to medium weight citrussy palate of medium plus intensity and persistence Mild acid but sufficient to take the life of this wine into the late 2020s. HH said 100% malolactic fermentation doesn’t show and rated this as #1 of 40 Tasmanian Chardonnays from 2015. Not as creamy as one would expect. A class act in any company. Had another bottle 30 weeks later on 23rd April 2022 with similar struck match modern Chardonnay notes although the citrussy palate is now more like light stone fruit like white peach. Still very pale lemon in colour. Still the same high score of 96 points.

Still pretty tightly packed straight out of the bottle.
Evolution in the glass holds reward if you can make it last long enough 🤤

Having a bit of a Tolpuddle time......have had worse weekends.....! If I have miscued on the irony these are very good wines! Pale Lemon in colour. Nutty almond and grapefruit notes with white citrus flowers with some funk - lees stirring? Light to medium weight palate with medium acid. Could go a couple more years if desired. This is a great example of cool climate Tasmanian Chardonnay. More Chablis than Meursault in style. The following day a little more tart. Tasted again 46 weeks later in Toowoomba on 21st January 2022 with consistent notes. Leesy funk. Citrus: Orange and Lime. Excellent. I will have the last one in at least a year’s time.

Pale Lemon in colour. Nutty and yeasty aromas. Quite lean on the palate - some would say Chablisesque but no oyster shell. Strong citric acid - some leesy notes. Ideally I would like to see riper mid palate fruit.
