Patriota Mendoza Malbec Bonarda

A dark and brooding violet with a wide rim and cherry undertones. A big, sexy nose of blackberries, smoke, and stewed plums. This is not a deeply complex or thoughtful but it’s certainly not a mindless fruit bomb. Year in and year out, it’s one of my favorite wines. 60% high altitude Malbec and the rest Bonarda, it doesn’t qualify as “mouth watering” or “refreshing” but it is damn good. Really nice, mild acidity along with fresh herbs joining in the mid palate for fun. Just the right amount of toasted oak and menthol in entry, with tons of red and black fruits providing backup. A hint of vanilla cream on the longish finish. This is the wine I give to people when they want something affordable and delicious. For a good reason.

Deep purple in color with a short purple rim.
Fruity nose of blueberries, plums, black currants, coffee, oak, cloves, earth, vegetables, graphites, spices, bitter herbs, wet leaves, vanilla, licorice and black pepper.
Full bodied and smooth with medium acidity and long legs.
Dry on the palate with plums, black currants, oak, cloves, earth, dark coffee, vegetables, graphites, bell pepper, spices, bitter herbs and peppercorn.
Medium plus in finish with soft tannins and tangy cranberries.
This Bonarda blend from Argentina is always enjoyable. Earthy with enough black fruits to be able to enjoy by itself. A good food wine too.

Good right out of the bottle and gets earthier as it opens up. This vintage does not seem to show a lot of tannins, for some reason. Maybe because there is more Bonarda than in other vintages.
Needs 2 years to mature properly.
I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.
A blend of 60% Bonarda and 40% Malbec.
13.5% alcohol by volume (feels like more).

I had a glass of this Malbec with a plate of meats/cold cuts. It is a well crafted and balanced wine. A mix of dark and red cherries, blueberries, plums and cranberries. Had some white pepper and mild tobacco spice. Softer than expected finish. Not as complex as I would have liked. An enjoyable and very approachable wine for those interested in exploring Malbec.
