Dense Crimson. The nose of this wine is like walking into a Spice shop in the Middle East. Clove , Aniseed, Salami, Bergamot, Earth and Mineral- needless to say an interesting nose. Leads to a similar interesting savoury complex palate. I have never rated Syrah/Shiraz from the Margaret River but this was quite exceptional. This wine won the 2011 Visy Trophy for best Australian Shiraz. I had bought a dozen - sold 4 to a friend and this was the last and best of the 8. Up with the quality of a good Cornas. Will look for more from this small producer.

Dense crimson in colour. Toffee savoury aromas along with spice and black pepper. Medium + bodied palate. Like a hypothetical cross between the Northern Rhone and Heathcote Vic, yet it comes from WA. Have always maintained that Syrah is not especially suited to Margaret River but this is an exception.

An excellent Margaret River Shiraz from a little known maker, Streicker. This wine won the Visy 2011 Trophy for Best Australian Shiraz. Very Rhone like with overt fruit in the background and pepper and meaty savoury notes to the fore. Impressive. 18.

Outstanding example of an Aussie Syrah that shows restraint and balance - perhaps part of the reason it’s not called Shiraz? Or is the Margaret River’s distance from the huge Shiraz’s of the SouthEast enough...
