2005 Sine Qua Non Atlantis Fe2O3-1c Syrah. 15.3% alcohol. And the SQN-a-thon continues! What can I say? I’m addicted. Don’t believe me? Check my profile. But back to the Wine. Not the typical, or should I say expected SQN profile. Reminiscent of Guigal La Landonne, but bigger. Well actually, bigger is the wrong word. A better descriptor would be more powerful. Monster aromatics just explode from the glass. Asian spice, white flowers, cedar, mushrooms and wet stones. Perhaps a hint of smoked bacon? On the palate, ripe berries, charred meats, beef blood, tobacco leaf, stewed tomatoes. Wonderful silky mouth feel. Graphite and tar on the substantial finish. Rich, pure, intense, complex. Highly extracted. Great balance and integration. Elegant. A work of art. Actually, Manfred’s avant-garde approach to wine making is not unlike the Impressionist painters. Tones, layers, textures, themes, colors, brushstrokes. It’s all there. Don’t remember how Parker rated this one, but if it wasn’t a 100 pointer it should be.
