From the Chicago Tribune, May 1, 1986: “Shafer Vineyards 1982 Napa Reserve, about $16. Ex-Chicagoan John Shafer has produced a wine of lovely, deep color with a tart cherry character. Loaded with extract and tannin, this wine is another that could use some aging, although it is drinking very well at present.”
Shafer renamed the wine Hillside Select with the 1983 vintage. This 1982 was a beautiful wine. Kaleidoscopic aromatics with the balance and backbone to go for many more years. Exquisite... and no longer $16.
